Sustain, v.
1. To strengthen or support physically or mentally.
2. To cause to continue or be prolonged for an extended period or without interruption.
3. To bear (the weight of an object) without breaking or falling.

ORIGIN: From the Latin sustinere, from sub- 'from below' + tenere 'hold'
